George and Anna Backer's legacy lives on today in each graduate of St. Louis University High School. Generous benefactors whose gift of their estate allowed the construction of the Backer memorial at 4970 Oakland Avenue in 1924 also created the first endowment gift for the school. That endowment each year provides tuition assistance to each and every young man who attends the high school.
Commemorating their generosity, SLUH has created the George H. and Anna F. Backer Heritage Society to honor and recognize others who have made provisions in their estate plans for the continuance of a high quality, Jesuit education for young men. The goal of the Heritage Society is to ensure that no young man—who is academically qualified to attend—will ever be turned away for financial reasons.
In recognition of those who have remembered SLUH in their estate, the school hosted a Heritage Society reception this fall in the Currigan Room. Attendees were welcomed by President David Laughlin, then enjoyed cocktails, hors d'oeuvres and friendly conversation with one another.
"The Heritage Society Reception included alums from many different eras," says Joyce Walsh, who attended the reception with her husband, Tom '58. "It was wonderful to be with so many SLUH alums who are totally vested in the school's purpose and maintaining its future."
The Heritage Society reception was a tremendous success, and SLUH plans to make the event a tradition in the years to come to thank donors for their generosity and hopefully inspire others to do likewise.
In the words of Karl Keffler '61, who attended the reception, "Heritage Society members are doers in life, givers at death, and ‘Men and Women for Others' forever."
